Over the years there have been thousands of terrorist organizations. In the 21st Century the most prominent of the terrorist groups or organizations has been Al Qaeda. However, there are numerous lesser known groups and organizations that currently are active. This page will provide a short description of a terrorist organization and provide information on some of the larger and more active terrorist groups.

Definition of a Terrorist Organization. There is a legal basis for declaring an organization as a terrorist organization. It is found in 8 USC Code 1189. You can read more on this at this link found on at Legal Information Institute of Cornell University of Law School.

Al Qaeda

Al Qaeda, or in Arabic "The Base", has been one of the most dangerous and prevalent terrorist organizations in history. This organization is responsible for numerous terrorist acts to include attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001. In addition, it operates throughout the world uniting many regional terrorist organizations in a common cause and goal.
