December 25, 2009. Underwear Bomber. A Nigerian citizen boarded an airplane in Nigeria, transferred onto an airplane in Amsterdam, and then attempted to blow up the airplane while it was in the air on final approach in Detroit on Christmas Day. He was unsuccessful. He pleaded guility in October 2011. Read more in Christmas Day Airplane Bomber. November 5, 2009. Fort Hood Massacre. A U.S. Army Major of Arab background killed 13 people and 29 were injured or wounded during a shooting spree at Fort Hood, Texas. The soldier, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, opened fire at a Soldier Processing Center. He was an Army psychiatrist. He was radicalized by Islamic web sites on the Internet and had been corresponding with a radical Muslim cleric in Yeman.
