Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) SystemThe Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) System is a key element of U.S. ballistic missile defense (BMD). The THAAD system employs interceptor missiles.

Payne) It can engage targets at ranges of 150-200 kilometers. The THAAD covers the ballistic missile defense middle tier and defends a larger area than the Patriot Air and Missile Defense System. A THAAD battery consists of approximately 90 soldiers, 6 truck mounted launchers, 48 interceptors (8 per launcher), a AN/TPY-2 radar, and tactical fire control/communications component. As of 2026 the Army has eight THAAD batteries. They are based at Fort Bliss, Texas (3), Fort Cavazos, Texas (2), and South Korea, and Guam. In 2023 a THAAD battery deployed to the Middle East. The THAAD system was also deployed in June 2025 for Operation Midnight Hammer and in 2026 for Operation Epic Fury. It has been reported that one or more THAAD AN/TPY-2 radars were destroyed by Iran in March 2026.
