USSOCOM
The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) is located in Tampa, Florida. It is a four-star command co-located on MacDill Air Force Base with Central Command (CENTCOM). USSOCOM was founded in 1987 with a focus on low-intensity conflict and special operations. After the terrorist attacks of 9/11 it became very focused on counterterrorism (CT). The 2018 National Defense Strategy (NDS) shifted the Department of Defense focus from counterinsurgency (COIN) and CT to great power competition (later referred to as strategic competition).
