Office of the Chief of Psychological Warfare (OCPW)

Home > SOF > History > OCPW

The Department of Defense (DOD) established the OCPW in late 1950 in response to the onset of the Korean conflict. The OCPW's mission included psychological warfare and special operations. The OCPW was initially structured into three main sections - Requirements (support for the other two sections), Psychological Operations, and Special Operations.

Within months, the Army established the Psychological Warfare Center and the 10th Special Forces Group - both located at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Some members of these two organizations were former personnel of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).
