A Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is a U.S. Navy surface combatant designed for coastal waters. In addtion to operating in shallow waters it can operate in the open ocean. It is modular in design and can be used to defeat near-shore threats like mines, deisel submarines, and fast-attack craft.

The LCS can operate indepently or in high-threat scenarios as part of a networked battle force that includes larger, multi-mission surface combatants such as cruisers and destroyers. The LCS mission packages are designed to enhance warfighting capabilities across two primary mission areas: Mine Countermeasures (MCM) and Surface Warfare (SUW). These mission packages are modular and can be swapped out depending on operational needs.
