A-10 Thunderbolt IIHome > Military > Aircraft > A-10 The A-10 Thunderbolt, commonly referred to as the A-10 Warthog or "Hog", is a U.S. Air Force close air support (CAS) aircraft. Orginially designed to be a 'tank killer' its role has evolved into the ground troops most favored CAS platform.

(DVIDS) It is a single-seat, twin-turbofan, straight-wing aircraft developed by the U.S Air Force primarily for close air support. It has excellent durability, massive firepower, and can operate from austere forward airfields.It offers excellent maneuverability at low airspeeds and altitude. It can operate for extended periods of time and has nightime capability as well. It has been in service since 1977. Its primary role is close air support with secondary roles of combat search and rescue and forward air controller. A FAC A-10 is sometimes referred to as an OA-10.
Weapons. 30 mm GAU-8/A Avenger rotary autocannon that can fire 3,000 rounds a minute - a round good enough to use against ground targets like a tank or amored vehicle. It can also mount laser and GPS guided munitions, AGM-65 Marerick and AIM_9 Sidewinder missiles.
